An inlay is an indirect restoration (filling) consisting of a solid substance (as gold or porcelain) fitted to a cavity in a tooth and cemented into place. To make this restoration, an impression of the prepared cavity is taken using an elastic material. It is sent to the dental technician who will make the inlay. Most inlays are made of gold or tooth-coloured porcelain.
Inlays are alternatives to fillings although they are much more expensive than composite fillings. What's the best for you will be determined by
the extent of the repair
your allergies to certain materials
where in your mouth the filling is needed
and the costs.
Considerations for different materials include:
Gold fillings which are called gold inlays are made in a laboratory and then cemented into place. Gold inlays are well tolerated by gum tissues, and may last more than 20 years. For these reasons, many dentists consider gold the best filling material. However, it is often the most expensive choice and requires multiple visits.
Porcelain fillings are called porcelain inlays or onlays and are produced to order in a laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. They can be matched to the color of the tooth and resist staining. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth. Their cost is similar to gold.
The dentist will recommend you a crown (cap), if a decay or a fracture has damaged a large portion of the tooth.
In treating dental decay, inlays and onlays help to eliminate tooth sensitivity and eventual tooth loss. Inlays and onlays also offer the following benefits:
Since they can be made from tooth-colored material, including porcelain and composite resin, inlays and onlays are virtually invisible.
Unlike metal fillings, inlays and onlays will not expand or contract in response to temperature changes caused by hot or cold foods. This change in size can cause teeth to weaken or fracture.
The use of inlays and onlays requires less tooth reduction than does the use of metal fillings. This allows dentists to conserve more of a patient’s natural tooth structure in the treatment process.
Because of the way inlays and onlays are made, they help to strengthen teeth by up to 75 percent.
The durable material from which inlays and onlays are made helps them last up to 30 years, much longer than that of conventional fillings.
Inlays and onlays can replace silver fillings to create a healthier, more natural-looking smile.
By saving decayed teeth, inlays and onlays prevent the need for more extensive treatment later on.
Initial dental consultation and X-ray in Ireland
Tibor Dental can arrange a Panoramic x-ray and consultation in Dublin or Cork. Our Hungarian dentists will make the treatment assessment. Your dental treatment assessment will be explained and you will be advised what treatment you need, how much it will cost, and how many days you will need to stay in Hungary.
The dental treatment usually requires the patient to be in Hungary 5-7 working days, so you can have a holiday there , but if you are a very busy person or can’t leave your children too long, you can go in 2 by 2 days, which means in the first visit you stay only 2 days to get the dental preparation, and 1 or 2 weeks after you go back again for an other 2 days to get the rest of the dental treatment in Budapest, Hungary.
